General Erection

The rumours about general election is getting hotter and hotter nowadays.But before the general election,here comes the general erection.

The price of everything is going up,not going down

Price of Nestle products on the hike.

Just only by this year,the price of Nestle products such as Milo and other dairy products such as milk powder had rised a few times,each time 5% to 8%.Although these stuff are not price-controlled items by the government,but they're important daily needs for nearly all the people of Malaysia.

Will you stop going to mamak stall although the price of the drink are raising higher and higher?

The price hike on dairy products and nestle products will eventually cause a chain reaction in the country.The price for Milo Ais,Nescafe Ais,Teh Tarik which are a must for Mamak-lovers will increase as well.

Imagine 1 day when teh tarik reaches RM2 per cup.

Even that day when I bought myself a packet of Milo Ais,the price actually hit RM2! Half year ago,it was just RM1.80,and now you see the difference.

On Sept 15, the price of enriched wheat flour went up from RM1.70 to RM1.80 per kilo to RM2 to RM2.10.This will cause another super-erection-chain-reaction.Enrinched wheat flour is used to make breads,buns,yellow noddles,thosai and beehoon,it is not an price-controlled item,unlike the plain what flour which is used to make kuih and roti canai is an controlled item.

I told my friend that day,eat bread when we're finacially tight.But now eat bread also expensive laa.

So,this means that the food that we are eating daily,ranging from sandwich to breads,from hokkien mee to curry mee,and from thosai to chapati,will face a rise in the price anytime from now.

According to some economy observer,the price hike for all daily utilities and products for this year had reached about 10% averagely;and please bear in mind that 2007 has not ended yet,meaning the percentage may goes higher than expected.

So,just get ready to be "erected".

Although there's still no official announcement by the government,but it is expected that several highways and expressways in the Klang Valley including North-South Expressway will raise the toll fare,according to the concessions and contracts signed.

On the other hand,as the international oil price hit USD90 per barrel,it's just the matter of time when will the government to decrease the heavy subsidy on the petrol price,and raise the price for petrol.

When the toll hike and petrol hike comes together,this is what I call a super-massive-erection-chain reaction where almost all the price of the goods we are using will be affected.Because logistics and transport company needs petrol or diesel to run their truck and lorries on highways and expressways,to ensure that goods and products are sent nationwide.

Nearly everything and goods produced need logistics and transport company to deliver their goods,including food products and so on.So,when the petrol price and toll are raised,it means that the cost will raised as well.So,where will these additional cost goes to? To the consumer and people,like us.Retailers will increase their prices as the middleman/distributors have increased theirs, taking the cue from the manufacturers and factories,hence this is the so called chain-reactions.

So,at that time,it's not surprise to see goods and products price rising high,and inflation going worst.

Still haven't feel the "heatwave" of the general erection? Visit to your nearby mamak stalls,kopitiams,warungs or talk to some daddy and mummy who have 3 kids at home.You'll know how and why.

Cool Thai police car

I gotta say Thai police car are so cool.

Chevrolet Optra with maximum speed at 202km/h.

Compared to Malaysian police car using Proton Waja or Kancil,which maximum speed around 180km/h (by luck sometimes),and Kancil?Who cares?

Maybe now I know why we can't eliminate those Mat Rempits on our roads.

Hatyai - Thailand

I think Hatyai is not something rare for Malaysians,especially for those "chicken-hunter".

I was in Hatyai during the Hari Raya weekend.Not to hunt for "chicken",but to hunt for nice foods and shopping.

Hatyai is not very far from Penang,a 3 hours drive will take us there.And the roads are so straight and hole-less.So,its really a comfortable and nice journey.

Straight and nice road,highway standard.But no toll.

I'm staying in Novotel Hotel above Hatyai Central for the next two nights.Well,overall,this four star hotel is still not bad,though the air-cond in the room was a bit colder than I expected.

Hatyai is not a very congested city,not much skyscrappers and tall buildings.Most of the tall buildings are hotels.

Although Hatyai is not a very busy city,but the traffic is terrible.The cars are moving anywhere they like,and motorists seemed to appear everyhwere on the road.

Crossing roads in Hatyai is a challenging task.

And most of the motorists are riding their motorcycle without helmet!

Huh?What is helmet hah?

It had been said that this is part of the Thai traffic culture that motorist don't wear helmet.And even the law permits them to do so.

Talking about traffic,there's not cad or taxi in Hatyai.The people or tourists in Hatyai uses a vehicle called Toot Toot as their cab or public transport.

Toot Toot~Toot Toot~ Why sounds more like train ah?

Toot Toot is a very economy public transportation.No matter where you wanna go,or when you wanna go,the fare of Toot Toot is actually flat rate,by counting per head.A person only cost about 15 Baht(RM1.50) or 20 Baht(RM2.00).

Long live the (Thai) King.

The Thai King has a very high reputation in Thailand and aming the Thais community.The Thais respect.love and show loyal to their King till a level of fanatic I should say.I have never seen a nation or people of any monarchy nation in this world that are so fond of their King.

Hatyai is special with its street market.There's lotsa stalls along the streets of Hatyai,or by the roadside.

Ranging from foods and drinks...

.....until fruits and vegetables....

....to shirts and dresses....

Almost anything you'll need or use it,you will get it from the stalls along the street.You name it,they got it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Street food is another specialties of Hatyai.During day and night,you'll see hawkers and food stalls around the city,serving nice food and local delicacies.
The Malay stall that sells fried stuffs...Huge prawns and chickens etc.But I bet you dare not eat those after looking at the color of the oil.
Mum said this is the cause of my pimples on my face.Oily and fried stuff.
There's really alot choices of food around Hatyai.At night,many streets and roads are filled with hawker stalls.
They even shut down a road in the town center,just for the hawkers...
This Ah Moi that was roasting the squid seemed kinda beh syiok.Hehez
Sotong bakar or roasted squid,ehz,one of my all time favourites,although I didn't taste it that night.
Oily.Very oily.Too oily.
Some fried stuff from the Malay stall around - fried chicken,fried drumstick,fried taokua and fried crab meat.Everything is FRIED!
Wantan mee with no wantan? Instead of wantan,there's alot of crab meat and char siu.
See Koay Teng,a type of dessert soup with sweet potatoes,yam,cendol etc etc...
Well,Hatyai is not just about street foods.There's lotsa nice restaurant serving delicious and fantastic (and cheap also) Chinese + Thai cuisine.I'll get to that later in my next few blogs.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just the night before I left Hatyai,there's ceromony celebrating the Vegetarian Festival or Jiu Wang Ye on the streets of Haytai.

The citizens of Hatyai are mostly Buddhist or Taoist.So,when it comes to the occasions about Buddha or Taoism,it's really something grand for them.

That night,there's a religious parade going on,with the marching of God and Tang Ki, a person that is selected to represent or be the messenger of God on earth.

Along with the drums and rythme,it's a real crowded celebration.

The guy in the costume is abit like Jamaluddin Hassan,the host of Who Wants to be Millionaire.Agree?

Some of the people dreesed up in religious costume and performing some religious custome.They walk and dance on the road joyfully.

It seemed that she doens't hurts,so calm and cool.

Some even pay their respects by stabbing sharp knives and metal into their body parts,without being injured or wounded.The locals said this is because these performers are blessed and protected by God,so they will have no injuries or wounds although the metal went through their cheeks,face,back,ANYWHERE.

But,please,don't try this at home.I'm not sure that wheater your God covers such protection or blessing for you.

A Penang-style Breakfast...

Before I left for Hatyai,Thailand, I was back in my hometown, Penang.

Penang Island is like a frog lying in the anatomy lab.

Although my duration in Penang for this time was kinda rush, but still I tried to grab as much time as I could to taste my hometown food.

If you ask me to choose between American-style breakfast or Chinese-style breakfast,I'd say Penang-style breakfast.

A typical breakfast in Penang-style was much an enjoyment for me. It's a combination of the different types of cooking style and taste,or I would name it total-fusion.

This is just like what was reflected in Malaysia,multiracial and multiculture,so as the foods.It's so unique that even a simple breakfast would combine foods and ingredients from different cultures and races.

Yummy yummy

Curry mee is one of the essences of Penang food.

Hot and spicy,thats the symbol of Penang food.

Yellow noodle with the curry soup,added with some taokua (beancurd),meat slices and egg,finally with some spicy chili-sambal.I don't know how to describe it,maybe it's just the taste of hometown?

Penang is a state in Malaysia with the highest populated Mamak or Hindu Muslim community.And Mamak food such as Roti Canai, Pasembur and Mee Goreng are some of the iconic foods for Penang.

This is no typical Maggi Goreng or fried noodle.

Mee Goreng in Penang isn't a normal fried noodles.The noodle used ain't Maggi or Indomee,but some normal yellow noodle.Cooked with kicap and some spices,adding with egg,some potatoes and taokua (beancurd),its totally a Penang specialty

Toast bread.Seemed normal and traditional?

Roti Bakar aka Toast Bread

Well,that's the part that attracted me.The taste of hometown and my childhood.Toast bread with kaya and Planta,sometimes will let me recalls back alot of childhood memories - eating the toast bread in the traditional kopitiam.It was the good old days.

I had been searching for this drink throughout the whole KL,from hawker center to cafe,from kopitiam to restaurant,I can tell you that none of them serve this drink.

Trust me,nothing taste better than this.

Almond drink,or Heng Jin in Hokkien dialect.It's a very healthy and nice drink.Not to sweet and tastes good,especially with ice.I would recommend it to serve in cold.

Undeniably,Penang is the heaven of NICE FOODS.

Although I'm not living in Penang anymore,but still,the tastes and foods of Penang will always be the "magnet" to attract me back to Penang once a while.For me,Penang food is not just a taste for enjoyment,but a taste for memory and tradition.

And,Penang is my home after all.

Great dinner in TGI Fridays...

Not long ago,my mum was in KL.She was supposed to attend some courses,but then it was cancelled in last minute.So the purpose of her stay in KL had changed to visit me...

Since my mum is here,I gotta bring her to dine in some great places.After walking round and round in The Curve,we decided to dine in TGI Fridays.

I'll be hungry even by just seeing at the signboard!

Well,I haven't dine in this outlet in The Curve before,I just hope the food quality would be OK for me,unlike the outlet in Queensbay Penang where the food are so terrible and below-standard.

TGI Fridays shares the same management with Italiannies,but I hardly see some similarities between them.The food and environment was totally different.TGI serves something more American,while Italiannies just serves Italian cuisine.

Sitting behind Superman,felt safe..

We ordered plenty of food,but thank god we manage to finish them all...

First to serve,the appetizers...

Mum was very fast,she got one in her mouth before I can capture the photo.

Mac and Cheese is something like crispy fried meatballs with cheese inside.It's crispy and you can actually feel the hot cheese burning your tongue with the meat as you bite.Serve with smashed-tomato sauce,it's a great combination.Nice one!

I swear I'll never buy A&W's onion rings anymore!

Honestly,I never ate onion rings that was so big before.I used to eat the tiny onion rings in A&W.But this one really excites me,it's just so crispy and crunchy.Well,I think I'm not gonna eat A&W's onion rings after this.Hehe...

Here comes the main course...

What a class,nice one...

I ordered Shrimp and NY Strip Steak.The portion was HUGE,just like Italiannies.The mashed-potatoes was more than enough for two person,and the portion of the steak was so big.I didn't knew that 200g of steak (this is what the waiter told me) were so much.Thank god I didn't ordered the 300g ones.

The taste were great,fantastic I should say.The medium well cooked beef that I requested was just nice for me,not too rare and not too well,it's just ngam ngam as what I expected. But in the other hand,the fried shrimps were just OK for me,not very special for me,it's just normal.Still i think Tempura suites me more,compared with fried shrimps.

The gravy sauce makes a good combination with the steak,but still I prefer the steak without gravy sauce,I just like more in that way.

Cholesterol.Fat Cow.

Just one thing,perhaps,the steak was a bit...uhm...fatty?

Something "Italiannies"?But the taste were not Italian at all!

Mum ordered something like Italian Pizza,I don't really remember the name,but when I refer to the receipt,it said "Parma Ques",any idea?

Well,it's just like a pizza with some meats and tomatoes in it,and again served with the smashed tomato sauce.Tasted normal for me,nothing special.Its just OK laa anyway...

The main courses

The best part of the night,is the dessert.

Masterpiece.I think I'm the happiest guy on earth after eating this.

Cookies with Ice Cream.The combination again amazed me,it was awesome.Although its just some normal ice cream,but the combination with cookies and the ingredients around,it's totally a MASTERPIECE.I can hardly forget the taste of it,even though days after that night.

Anyway,in the end I was glad that the TGI Fridays in The Curve maintained a high-standard of food quality.It really satisfied me and my mouth.It's a great sense of dining there,great environment and nice food.

But I still missed the dessert most!

A bad bad bad morning

Tell you what,I'm having a bad bad bad morning.

Can you imagine,when you woke up in a nice morning and as you just stepped in the class,one of your friend blasted you straight to your face without listening to your explain.How does that felt?Especially when it concerns about BLOG and these personal thingy.See the point of explode here - http://darrentoh.blogspot.com/2007/09/something-from-indonesia.html

I didn't have any chance to explain or tell the true thing by then,what she knew was just kept on blasting on my face.Besides feeling hurt,dissapinted and sad,I'm really Tulan as well.

Anyway,at last I did made my explanation to her.But,seemed that the person concerned was not very happy with my answer and explanation.But at least,I did my role and what I can do to explain.I tried my best to explained and convince her what was going on.

I started my blog here at blogspot no long ago,so the entry is still not much,but someone eventually are too senstive and misunderstand my blog and my meaning.Actually its a really simple blog that stated out my feelings and my thoughts on some foods,and also happenings around the food.Too bad,the whole thing was somehow "twisted",and caused misunderstandings or even hatred,I guess. But I really don't have the intention to attack or hurt someone.

I'm a straight person.What I wrote in my blog is my real feelings and what had happened.I don't hide some hidden agenda or hidden meaning behind,and no "hint here hint there" as well.If I don't like something,I'll just speak it out,no point to make it till so complicated.

My blog is just like my another face,it only speaks the true thing.I speak and do something like a man,and I'll do what is only right,true and be responsible.If you'd say I like to "shoot" someone purposely without reason or make story,sorry mates,I wouldn't do that to my friend.

Thats why,I doubted someone are fanning the flames at the back.I don't know who,but I just can feel it.

Because of this matter,I got some advice from my blogger friends.And I can make a conclusion that,to be a blogger is to reflect the happenings or things that happen around you.If your intention is on the good side,but others just misinterprete and misunderstand it,you shall make an explaination.That was what I did this morning.

We,bloggers are meant to be responsible to what they wrote and statement,so if a blogger had already do what they should,its up to the blog viewers.I admit everyone has different minds or thoughts,sometime what you thought might not be the same as mine,so thus vice versa.I cannot please everyone,what I can do is to please the majority,and do the best part of my job.

If all the blog viewers are so sensitive and petty,I guess prominent bloggers like JeffOoi(http://www.jeffooi.com/) and Kennysia(http://www.kennysia.com/) should be long buried by people.

Just like my blog tittle "Reflections",I'm sure more and more things will be reflected in the coming years.

*Special Notice:No offence to anyone.Its totally my own thoughts and feelings.Please be informed.
